WEEK 2 - 19.09.2017
Idea generation workshop: We had the idea generation workshop this week. With my critical group, the idea that came out from that workshop was to create a "mood lamp" that would change colors according to people's tweets feed.
Project ideas: I realised most people in Scotland don't know anything about handball, though it's one of the most famous sports in France. So I also want my project to help sharing that great sport and teach people about it.
Handball is a fast paced, offensive and kind of agressive sport both in attack and in defense.
Handball rules from rulesofsport.com :
-
A match consists of two periods of 30 minutes each.
-
Each team consists of 7 players; a goalkeeper and 6 outfield players.
-
Outfield players can touch the ball with any part of their body that is above the knee.
-
Once a player receives possession, they can pass, hold possession or shoot.
-
If a player holds possession, they can dribble or take three steps for up to three seconds without dribbling.
-
Only the goalkeeper is allowed to come into contact with the floor of the goal area.
-
Goalkeepers are allowed out of the goal area but must not retain possession if they are outside the goal area.
This week I have done some research about handball in general and found L. Fradet's thesis that analyses simulations of handball shots. The thesis explains what are the different ways of shooting (from afar or closer to the goal for example), the way shooting changes the physical condition of the player and team play. When shooting in handball you place your arm in a way that is similar to baseball or javelot or a pass from a quarterback. There is a whole process that comes before shooting.
I have also analyzed some recent handball games studies. A few years ago, team sports data would just be focused on covered distance during the game but nowadays, there is a really interest for the different efforts that compose the game.
A study from 2002 (expertise-performance.u-bourgogne.fr) showed that a game is 37% of walking, 31% of jogging, 25% of running and 1% of sprinting in average. Also they analysed that actions during the games are during 2 seconds each (jumps, defensive actions, shots...). Overall this study was looking into the duration, intensity and succession of the efforts during the games.
Lastly, a handball game works this way: running/jogging -> rest -> effort -> rest -> running/jogging -> ....
Other researches I have done were more general. I have firstly researched motivation or how to initiate and persist at a task. Then I've also looked into competition. I have found out that competition is a big influence on performance but that it can be difficult to use it in a group as it kills morale, cause stress and foster backstabbing.
